In Uganda the consequences of the pandemic and the lockdown have resulted in a very serious food, social and economic emergency: people are worried they are going to die of hunger.

In the slums families of up to 10 people live in a single room and have no means of supporting themselves. Before the lockdown they sought to survive by selling food or clothes at the market but now they can’t even rely on this minimal source of income.

The closure of the schools makes the situation even more serious: the children are permanently closed in these dark rooms and can no longer take advantage of the free meal that we offer in our schools. The population is on its knees.

For this reason we have set up the Emergency Fund: to take urgent action where it is most needed.

We are distributing weekly food packages to all of these families, enabling everyone to receive at least one meal a day. To limit the spread of the virus we are supplying face coverings made in our tailor’s shop.

A package for a family of six contains:

  • Cornmeal: cost UGX 3,000/kg  5 kg is required for a total of  UGX 15,000 (€ 3.75)
  • Beans: cost UGX 5,000/kg  5 kg is required for a total of  UGX 25,000 (€ 6.25)
  • Salt: cost UGX 2,000/250 g  500 g is required for a total of  UGX 4,000 (€ 1.00)
  • Soap: unit cost 4,500  2 needed for a total of  UGX 9,000 (€ 2.25)

These ingredients can be used to make posho (typical Ugandan polenta) to eat together with beans (a simple yet very nourishing dish that we distribute in our schools). The soap helps guarantee better hygiene for all the family and the face coverings protect against Covid-19.

Together we can stop the emergency within the emergency:

With €13 you guarantee food and face coverings for 1 Ugandan family

With €26 you guarantee food and face coverings for 2 Ugandan families

With €52 you can support a family for a month
